“The Happening” of My Respect Happening Part 2
Please keep in mind that this is not a review. This is a follow-up from last week’s post, which consisted of the notion that I was going to either keep or lose my respect for M. Night Shyamalan as a filmmaker. I was giving him one last chance with his latest film, The Happening, which was advertised as his “first R rated film,” and his “scariest yet.” I went on Friday night to see The Happening, and this was my experience. Living in a college town and knowing how opening weekends are for these types of blockbusters, I arrived 30 minutes early to get a seat. I purchased my ticket and sat down – there was absolutely no one in the theater. Could Shyamalan’s reputation really be that shot? I sat in the theater practically alone until it happened – no pun intended. The crowed rushed in and filled almost every single seat. I guess people nowadays like to come in at the very last second and fight one another for a good seat in a dark theater. It must add to the amount of fun. I actually got a little excited to see it this crowded, because it meant that people either don’t know who Shyamalan is or they are indeed giving him a second chance. As the movie started, instead of laughter that I heard from people surrounding me throughout Lady in the Water, I heard people sounds of shock as Shyamalan portrayed people killing themselves in very sadistic and realistic manners. Mark Wahlberg and John Leguizamo put on a powerful and touching act, and Zooey Deschanel was very eerie and quiet role. Shyamalan’s story was very well written and thought out, and the character’s reactions to what was going on were portrayed very rationally. Unfortunately, the boom-mic was shown in some of the interior shots in The Happening, but that was due to the projectionist setting up the alignment incorrectly. I looked online just to make sure that the edit crew just didn’t overlook the boom-mic appearances, and some people said they saw it and some said they didn’t. When it comes out to DVD it won’t be noticeable, so this didn’t bug me like it did to some of the audience members around me. The Happening is not a formulaic movie at all. Overall, it seems more of a political statement and something to make us think about the environment. I’m not going to give away the ending, but I will warn you that there isn’t much of one. It keeps it open and makes us think about the different possibilities. I for one, love endings like this, but a lot of people don’t. They like closure and resolution, and the ending of The Happening may have ruined it for some. It seemed that some of the audience enjoyed the film, and naturally some seemed a tad disappointed due to random verbal comments I heard as people left. Ultimately, The Happening was a beautiful movie with a good ending point and amazing direction. My respect for M. Night Shyamalan is even stronger now, and I can’t wait for his next. The Happening shows that he can still create a very good movie and still be somewhat experimental, non-formulaic, and very unique. The Happening came out third this weekend in box office sales, with over a massive $30 million weekend gross. Congratulations, M. Night. |
